Rocktec wins South Australian contract

  June 2010

Rocktec has recently won a contract with Southern Quarries to provide a tertiary screening plant at its Sellicks Quarry. Located between Aldinga and Myponga, just outside Adelaide, South Australia, the quarry is mined for dolomite and bluestone.

Southern Quarries undertook a competitive tender process, which included local suppliers, before selecting Rocktec. Southern Quarries CEO Brett Brown visited Matamata in New Zealand, where Rocktec is based, to personally check out the company’s manufacturing operations and capabilities. This evaluation also included Rocktec’s health and safety and quality values. Brett also had the opportunity to see Stevenson’s Drury quarry that Rocktec had previously supplied equipment to in 2003.

“Viewing first-hand the quality of Rocktec’s manufacturing and processes, as well as taking into account their proven track record in delivering plant equipment to a wide range of both local and international customers, helped to swing the decision in their favour” says Brett Brown. It was crucial that we found a company we could see as a project partner and not just a supplier of screens and conveyors when undertaking our evaluation of suppliers. The positive ‘can-do’ attitude from all of the team at Rocktec gives us a lot of confidence that this will be a very successful project.”

Rocktec CEO Rick Johnson said he was “pleased to have won a tender with a company of the calibre of Southern Quarries. They have demonstrated that they are forward thinking and open to new technology. It’s clear they are only interested in working with technology and suppliers with a good track record. This outcome represents a vital step in our strategic penetration of the Australian market and our ongoing efforts to provide cost-effective solutions for its quarry industry. We’re looking forward to providing Brett and his team with a solution that meets not only today’s needs but will also provide them with the flexibility to meet their future client requirements.”

Rocktec’s tertiary screening plant will be connected to the output of a second-hand plant that Southern Quarries have purchased and relocated from Malaysia. This plant will crush and screen through primary and secondary stages. The tertiary plant supplied by Rocktec will take the output from a Barmac 9100 VSI crusher at 400 tonnes per hour and provide multiple screening and stockpiling options (including radial stacking), which will produce the various graded product splits required by Sellicks’ Quarry. The plant will include three new evolution Sandvik SC screens (two SC2463 20’ x 8’ and one SC1852 16’ x 8’ units) that will be commissioned with wire screen media sizing at the appropriate apertures. The plant will include 11 conveyors and 3 radial stacker conveyors. It will be able to produce aggregate ranging from sand to 20mm aggregates.Rocktec has commenced the design phase and will complete the project around July 2010. Rocktec will assemble the tertiary screening plant on site at Sellicks’ Quarry.

Second project in South Australia
Although this Southern Quarries project is not Rocktec’s first successful tender win in the region, it is its first quarry plant supply project in the state. Rocktec has previously provided significant specialty mining equipment for Project Magnet, a OneSteel mining development at Whyalla, near Adelaide.

Rocktec’s Aussie connection pays off

  September 2009 - May 2010

Last year Rocktec won a contract to supply two large Mobile Feed Hopper Trains for loading iron ore at a new port facility being constructed at Port Hedland in Western Australia. The pair of Mobile Feed Hopper Trains will be part of the ship loading system at the Port Hedland Port Authorities new $225 million dollar (Australian) port facility at Utah Point.

“Winning the contract recognizes Rocktec’s ability to provide specialized design and proprietary equipment economically into the Australian market” says Rocktec CEO, Rick Johnson. “Our innovative approach and track record, along with cheaper product costs from New Zealand, won us this contract.”

Mobile Feed Hoppers are a specialized piece of equipment and have been used on a number of previous sites, but generally only in a single carriage format. Each of Rocktec’s two Mobile Feed Hopper Trains will be able to feed onto the ship loading system at a rate of 7500 tonnes per hour.

“This project has not only provided a substantial boost to our own export revenue and staff security but we are pleased to be helping a number of other New Zealand companies with much needed work opportunities during this challenging economic period” says Johnson.

In late 2008 Rocktec set up an Australian entity (Rocktec Australia PTY Ltd) in Brisbane to provide on the spot services to its Australian client base. “The operation provides a prompt sales and marketing response and local specialized labour for maintenance, installation and commissioning of its plant for Australian customers” says Rick.
